The Four E's of Learning Guitar Fast!

Nov 08, 2025

I'll never forget one of my first guitar lessons as a kid. I told the teacher that my moms old rusty-stringed acoustic guitar was hurting my fingers and I couldn't get a good sound out of it.

His reply? "That's how we all started, kid."

That was my last lesson with him.

The next day I took my entire allowance and went and bought a cheap electric guitar. I wrote 5 songs on it that same day using chords I made up. And by the end of the year I had formed a band and was playing small gigs around town.

What was the difference?

These four E's of Learning Guitar Fast:

  1. Ease: The electric guitar strings are easier to press down and the action (the height of the strings off of the fretboard) is much lower and easier to manage. The easier the guitar is to start, the faster you fast the second E.
  2. Enjoyment: Everyone enjoys easy things. It's why candy crush was such a hit - it was easy and instant. Although the guitar is much more satisfying and substantial than a silly game the principle holds true. The more you enjoy something, the more you pick it up. And the more you pick up the guitar the faster you get. It's that simple!
  3. Energy: If you have ever ridden a bike before you know the energy boost you get each time you kick off the curb. Enjoying something challenging brings with it a certain sort of adrenaline. This chemical reaction in the brain is often overlooked when learning the guitar, but it is why some people seem to pick it up "naturally" and others don't. Energy is the wind in your sails that keeps you going long after others have quit.
  4. Excellence: Once you have made a challenging task easy, you've enjoyed it over and over, resulting in the energy to pick it up again and again and again you find yourself in a rare class of guitar excellence. And the thing is, no one cares if it took you 3 years or 3 months to get there... as long as you've got the chops you are a guitarist and you can play whatever song you want. That's the goal.

And that's it! That's why I developed the Stupid Simple Guitar Method™ and that's why I created The Closet Rockstar Course. It was so that ANYONE could pick up a guitar and learn faster and easier than ever before. Okay, I had some help from the pros back in the 60s and 70s, because they all used a similar method too! But no one else teaches it. Not on YouTube. Not at Berklee. Nowhere except in our course.

And you can find out all about it and see if you'd be a good fit at our Black Friday Event on November 28th at 11am EST. We're going be to giving away some stuff, some guitars, a huge discount, that sort of thing!

Sign up, mark your calendars and I'll see you there!

Jam soon,

JB

Why must you play the guitar?
Why must you play the guitar? When I ask folks over 50 this question, the answers usually sound like: “I’ve wanted to play since I was a kid.” “I don’t want to leave this world without finally doing it." “I want to play songs my wife / kids / grandkids recognize.” “It relaxes me after a long day.” "I'm getting an early jump against dementia"  “I just don’t want to feel ‘too old’ to learn someth...
Memorializing: v) preserve the memory of some one or thing
It's Memorial Day and if you have served in the military, first, thank you for your service and sacrifice. It is easy to forget that the freedoms we enjoy in this country came at a price and many are still paying that price today.  But what do we do on a day like this?  Visit the gravesite of lost loved ones, attend a service, watch a movie, listen to music that was meaningful way back when. Bu...
