Sheep intestines... is that what that smell is?

I've always been fascinated by history.

Take the guitar, for example.

Up until the early 1800s a guitar's strings were made of sheep intestines.

That was when C.F. Martin decided to innovate and do something no one had done in the hundreds of years prior - change the strings.

You see, banjo players played on steel strings and some of them were picking up guitars for the first time for their louder projection and warmer tone. Martin thought it would help them to transition if the strings were made of the same material.

There was a problem though - guitars had never been able to handle that much tension without snapping in half.

And so another innovation was necessary. Well, it would have been necessary had Martin not already thought of it.

The bracing inside of the guitar needed to be strong enough to hold the tension that had increased from 60 pounds (sheep intestines) to over 200 pounds (steel strings), but Martin had already created a unique X-brace decades before he began using steel strings.

Which I find fascinating - building the right foundation will lead to greater breakthroughs later on down the road.

What foundations are you building with your guitar? Send me a note, I'd love to hear from you! ([email protected]).

Jam soon,

JB

He was called "god" at 25. His greatest work came at 46.
There's a version of Eric Clapton's story that most people know. The prodigy. The legend. The man whose fans spray-painted "Clapton is god" on the walls of London Underground stations in the 1960s when he was barely in his mid-twenties. The guitarist who played on Beatles records, formed Cream, wrote Layla, and became the only musician ever inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three sep...
The guitar in the closet
There's a particular kind of person I love working with. They've done everything right. Built a career over 35 years that most people would envy. Retired with financial security, the freedom to travel, maybe a sports car in the driveway and a pilot's license to boot. By every conventional measure, they've won. And yet there's still one thing sitting in the closet... or the corner of the spare b...
What does B-ball have to do with playing the Guitar after 60?
It's March in 'Merica thus no one escapes the NCAA B-ball Tournament known as March Madness.  A lot of times we label ourselves as "jocks" or "musicians" or "you-name-it". But the reality is that we are more than our labels and a good game can be enjoyed by a good guitarist and vice versa.  Take last night's game for instance.  #2 seed UConn against #1 seed Duke.   Most of the country had Duke ...
