I got coffee with the Goo Goo Dolls Drummer on Monday

May 07, 2026
Connect

Earlier this week I met up with (former) drummer of the band, Goo Goo Dolls, Mike Malinin.

Mike recently moved to the Chicago area and was looking to connect with other artists so we sat down to talk music and life.

One of the things that surprise me was how down to earth the guy is - and I gotta say for an L.A. guy he pulled off the John Deere hat.

As we were talking he asked me how my Closet Rockstars Club was going and I explained the unique method I use to get students playing 60 songs in 90 days with just 15 min/day of practice and he laughed...

He said, "man, everybody in LA uses that method, but nobody admits it."

Huh?

This guy has drummed on albums that have sold millions and he's seen some of the best guitarists in the world in his time and he confirmed... all the pros use the "secret" in our stupid simple method.

Which got me to thinking... if it's good enough for the pros... why not for hobbyists playing for family and friends or for local guys gigging at their favorite spots?

It made me think of Annie who in her sixties was able to rock out to some Joni Mitchell within ten minutes of using our method and of August who jammed out on Free Fallin on his first day.

Unfortunately, The Closet Rockstars Club, is filled up for May, BUT we have a VIP Waitlist for June that's already started to fill up. So if you're ready to make this summer the summer you play that awesome thing in sitting in your closet and to become a Closet Rockstar then REPLY to this email "Goo Goo" and I'll put you on the VIP Waitlist. This will ensure you have first dibs to one of our limited spots in June.

2026 is gonna be the year of guitar for some of you and I can't wait to see it! Hit me up to get on our VIP Waitlist today.

Jam in June!

-JB

You don't know what you don't know... neither did he
I talked to a guy recently who was in his sixties, top of his career and miserable. He had no more mountains to climb, no new hills to take and everything felt pretty meaningless. So his wife bought him a guitar. He had never been musical, but she knew he liked listening to the old rock classics.  And something happened. He loved it. Every bit of it. The smell of the rosewood rubbing off on his...
Springsteen-Strength
In the summer of 1976, Bruce Springsteen was everywhere. His face was on the cover of Time and Newsweek in the same week — a feat no rock musician had pulled off before. Born to Run had made him a phenomenon. The world was waiting to see what he'd do next. Then, almost overnight, everything stopped. A legal dispute with his manager Mike Appel over the direction of his career had been building f...
He waited too long
"I'm sorry but I have to put the guitar down for good." Words he never thought he’d say, but were true. This was a student of mine last year who had always said “one day I’ll pick up the guitar” and kept putting his career ahead of his dream.  Unfortunately by the time “one day” rolled around and he was retired arthritis had set in so badly that within a few weeks the pain was unbearable. My h...
